Brighton Cemetery - Flag Commemoration

FLAG COMMEMORATION was held on Friday [22nd April] on a most glorious morning with about 130 people attending. Our President, Malcom Gray welcomed everyone then Timothy Holden RSL Victoria, State Honorary Treasurer recited the Ode. Thomas Steele played the last Post on his bugle and after a minutes silence he played Reveille.

After talking about 1288 Private Edwin Albert Geach, The Mayor of Glen Eira, Cr Jim Magee placed a flag at his grave. Mayor of Bayside, Cr Alex del Porta then spoke about Captain Rupert Carl Wertheim and with Sara Wertheim placed a flag at his grave.

“Drawing of Straws” – Corporal John Leonard Whitty’s name was drawn out by Timothy Holden and he will have a plaque placed on his dirt grave.

Then family and friends of the other 33 veterans along with one family from November came forward to accept a flag to place at their loved ones grave site after which they came back and mingled while refreshments were served.

These 35 ANZAC Week flags along with the 15 placed for Remembrance Day 2021 are the first 50 flags and will be joined with another 50 flags for Remembrance Day 2022. The flags will be flying for a week each Anzac & Remembrance Days.

An amazing sight seeing all the flags blowing gently in the breeze.
